As shown elsewhere, the Good Friday hour of meditation will be held in Chickney church at 2pm. Afterwards a warm welcome awaits everyone for tea and hot cross buns in New Chickney Hall. Please do not park in the lane but go through the gates and park on the right hand side of the drive. This will leave the area outside the church clear for disabled parking.

The next meeting of the Council is on Thursday 14th April, at 8.15 pm in the Village Hall. All meetings of the Council are open to members of the public and the Council always welcomes villagers and is keen to hear their opinions and ideas.

Children’s Society Box Opening

The annual box opening took place on 15th March and we will bring you the result next month. In the meantime Linda Barrow would like to thank Yvonne and John Rodliffe and the Broxted committee of St Mary’s for their contribution in the form of a cheque.


Quizzes now take place on the first and third Thursday of each month – the next dates being 7th and 21st April and 5th May. The quizzes are great fun, you don’t need to organise a team, come as a couple or bring along a few friends. Entry to the quiz is just £2 a head, and there are cash prizes!


Sadly, there has been an increase in the incidence of fly tipping in the area. Fortunately, Uttlesford District Council is very quick to respond to calls to clear the rubbish. To contact the Council call 01799 510510 and ask for ‘fly tipping’.


Freecycle Event

Following the success of last November’s event the Association will be holding another on Saturday 7th May in Broxted Village Hall. Put simply, it is like a bring-and-buy sale but without the buying. Just bring along your unwanted items and take away anything you see that you could make use of. No money changes hands. This is a good time for a spring clean, so clear out your shed/workshop/playroom/cupboards and get rid of those things you no longer want, but which could be of use to someone else. At the end of the day the Association will re-cycle or dispose of anything that is left.

The event will run from 11am until 2pm, and there will be tea and cake available to fortify you during your browsing. Any queries, in the first instance please contact Angela on 01371 872894.

Annual General Meeting

Please come along to the Village Hall on Tuesday 17th May at 8pm to find out what the Community Association has been up to over the past year. Whilst new members are always welcome, there’s no pressure to join the committee, and you absolutely will not be forced into anything just for showing up!

Members do welcome people to the AGM if only to provide some feedback and perhaps a fresh outlook on what they do. There will be wine and cheese afterwards, as an added incentive for your attendance.


This service will visit Broxted on Wednesday 13th and 27th April, arriving at Cranham Road at 10.40 am, departing 11.00 am and arriving at the Prince of Wales at 11.05 am, departing at 11.25 am. It will be at Molehill Green Post Office on Friday 1st, 15th and 29th April at 1.50 departing at 2.05 pm.

The season of Lent is upon us, and perhaps at some time you will have been asked, “What have you given up for Lent?” You and I know Lent is about much more than giving up chocolate or biscuits, or giving up watching your favourite television soap. While discipline is required to stick with (y)our resolve, it is important that we use the time to trigger our thoughts towards God – when we crave the chocolate or the biscuit, pray for those without food and the agencies who seek to alleviate their hunger. Pray for the will of people to want to work to alleviate poverty in a world where there is enough food for everyone, but we don’t share it well. With the time saved each week by not watching something on television, it could give you that much needed time to visit someone, make that telephone call, sit and pray for the needs of the world, or just sit and provide God with the opportunity to speak with you.

Lent is the lead up to Easter. What does Easter mean to you? When we read the events leading up to Easter Day we have to engage with the range of emotions. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are filled with bad news! It holds painful memories of Jesus being betrayed by his friends, unfairly tried, sentenced to an excruciating and humiliating death, being watched and jeered by the crowd, abandoned by his Father, dying, buried in a borrowed tomb. And then the contrast with the good news of his rising from the dead, giving hope, bringing forgiveness, offering new life, re-birth, that and much more won for us by the Son of God that first Easter weekend.

I wonder was the outcome what the people expected? Some, it would seem, were surprised, shocked, filled with disbelief, even though Jesus had told them that after three days he would be raised from the dead. Even Mary was surprised. On the first Easter day she expected to find the grave closed and sealed. She found it open, and the stone rolled away.

Mary expected to find the body wrapped up on the ledge. She found the clothes there but no body.

She expected to be alone, but she found someone else was there.

She expected to find Jesus dead. She found him alive. God surprised Mary and turned her life upside-down. He changed her tears to laughter, and fear to joy. She knew Jesus was alive and life was never the same again.

WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING THIS EASTER? What will you find? It is my prayer that you will find the unexpected – and be surprised.

May it be a HAPPY EASTER for you.

BAA Appeal Fails

In February BAA lost their appeal in the Supreme Court to mount a further appeal against a ruling that it must sell Stansted Airport as well as one of its Scottish airports. BAA described this ruling as “disappointing”. We await the outcome – will BAA continue to seek a review of this ruling or maybe appeal to the European courts?

The collection basket for this year’s Appeal will continue to be in the churches up until Easter Sunday. As explained last month, the Appeal is on the theme of ‘Relieving poverty, enabling mission’ and is for the benefit of The Marsabit Mission Area in Northern Kenya.

The preparation of this issue had many interruptions with the TV pictures of the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and our prayers and thoughts go to everyone in their suffering.

Coming as close as it did after the February earthquake in New Zealand, we are pleased to report a happier ending for all of us in the Five Parishes concerning James Faithfull. He worked in the Pyne Gould Guinness building in Christchurch and was trapped in its rubble for 22 hours before he was rescued. He sustained cracked ribs and three cracked vertebrae, so he is in a brace for 6 to 8 weeks. His father, David, says that he is making good progress at home with Jacqui, Isobel and Ollie, has not lost his sense of humour and that they intend to come back to live here permanently as soon as possible.


Tickets are now available for this ‘special event’, to commemorate the wedding of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales KG to Miss Catherine Middleton. This is the regular Tilty Spring Lunch with a difference. It will take place as usual on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May but this time at GREAT EASTON Village Hall, 12.30pm for 1pm. Those of you that have been before will know that a wonderful buffet lunch is provided and it also gives the opportunity to sample the ‘famous’ Tilty desserts.

If you are not one of the lucky ones who have received an official Wedding Invitation, then do go along to toast the happy couple. There will, of course, be one or two surprises to ensure an enjoyable time will be had by all and your ticket will include a glass of wine on arrival. The next meeting is on Wednesday 20th April, 2.30pm, at the Thaxted Disabled Centre. Rural Dean, the Revd Cilla Hawkes, will be leading a Quiet Hour for Lent. A change is coming for The Friends with their annual church service. This year there will be a morning Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 18th September with the Bishop of Colchester presiding and giving the sermon. The service will be followed by wine and canapés in the garden of The Old Vicarage. Harvest Hampers will be raffled to help raise funds for The Friends. This change will save us being dragged out on a dark November evening for Evensong.

The Friends have recently received a cheque from the 50% Club for £800. This will go towards the expected hefty bills for building work on our churches.

The 2011 General Open Days commence on Sunday 17th April with the gardens open from 12 noon to 6pm, last entry at 5pm (subject to weather conditions and nightfall). Entry costs £2.50 per adult, with children free.


The Greville Theatre Club is proud to present, for its spring production A Family Affair by Alexander Ostrovsky, a scathing farce about the Russian merchant class, where the swindler is swindled and every cross is a double cross.

Wonderfully boisterous, scurrilously funny and bitingly irreverent, A Family Affair, adapted by multi-award-winning playwright Nick Dear, is a stinging play about greed, corruption and the desire to climb the social ladder whatever the cost. When written in 1850, it caused an absolute uproar that resulted in this remarkable and hilarious satire being banned for more than thirty years by Tsar Nicholas I. The government censor was heard to cry ‘The characters are first rate villains, the dialogue is filthy and the entire play is an insult to the Russian merchant class!’

Did you know that on the Highways website www.essex.gov.uk/Travel-Highways/Report-a-highway-problem/Pages/Default.aspx anyone can report a road problem (potholes etc) or a footpaths problem and they will look at it? Hopefully by reporting problems in this way they will be fixed more quickly.


The meeting on Tuesday 5th April will be a Club night. The Club meets at the Thaxted Centre for the Disabled at 7.30 pm and visitors are always welcome.


During the first two weeks of July St Mary’s Church, Dunmow will host a Bible Exhibition together with a range of Special Evenings to celebrate 400 years of the King James Bible and the continuing work to make the Bible available in the languages of the people. More news will follow.


Stop Stansted Expansion will be holding another giant sale of good quality second hand books at its Campaign Office at the Old School House by the Four Ashes Crossroads, Takeley, on Saturday 2nd April between 9am and 1pm. On Sunday 3rd April, Felsted Choral Society will be performing Handel’s final oratorio, Jephtha. The story tells of Jephtha’s promise to sacrifice the first creature he sees on his return home if he is victorious in battle. Returning home triumphant, he is met by Iphis, his daughter. If you want to find out how this story ends, come along to Felsted Chapel at 7.30 pm on the 3rd April. This year’s programme commences on Tuesday 19th April when Canon Rosemary Drew will explore positive as well as negative aspects of our suffering. UDC runs this service every Saturday and Sunday from April to November with a bring bank at Chequers Lane Car Park, Great Dunmow every weekend and a bring bank that alternates each weekend between Stansted Lower Street Car Park and Thaxted Margaret Street Car Park. All from 9am to 3pm.


With Parish and District Council Elections being held on Thursday 5th May, as well as the referendum on the Alternative Vote voting system, it is important to check that your name is on the Register of Electors, or you will not be able to vote. Each Parish Council Clerk has a copy of the Register, or you can simply ring Uttlesford District Council on 01799 510431 or 510432 to check that you are registered to vote, or to obtain a form to have your name added to the Register – it is not too late to be added.

There will be a fabulous display of quilts made by members, a Charity Tombola in aid of Essex Air Ambulance and Breast Cancer, demonstrations by Lynne Edwards and Nickie Kimber and trade stalls. A few days before I wrote this article, Reverend Cilla was in school taking assembly, bravely armed with a mini gas stove and bag of ingredients! She was making a pancake in front of 150 children and staff, illustrating Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. Now only a few days later I am thinking ahead to the start of the summer term when we return to school in April.

The timing of our Easter break has presented us all with a tricky situation. Last Year we broke up for Easter on the day before Good Friday, so we were able to have our School Easter church service very close to the Easter Period. This year Easter weekend falls right at the end of our break. We therefore have decided to hold our (just after!) Easter service when we come back to school on Wednesday 27th at 10am in Great Easton Church.

When we do come back for the summer term we are only back to school for three days and then we will be closed again for the Royal Wedding and May Bank Holiday Weekend. Whilst these three and four day weeks may at first seem appealing, during April our Year 6 and Year 2 pupils will be busy preparing for their end of Key Stage Tests (SATS) which take place during May and June. Perhaps William and Kate could arrange for some tables and spellings to be read out during the service to make up for the lost time at school!

A new term will bring new topics for each class. Our lower school children will be learning all about mini beasts whilst the upper school classes will be studying journeys. Teachers are already beginning to gather resources, plan schemes of work and arrange trips and visits.

You may read articles in the press about the Government’s White Paper on education and the upcoming National Curriculum Review. One of the many unique features of our school is our diverse and creative curriculum. We are 100% confident that whatever legislations are introduced and however the new curriculum is set out, the way we teach and plan at Great Easton makes us ‘government proof’ and our broad, balanced and creative curriculum will always remain.

Five Parishes



As you know, the Prince of Wales re-opened in the summer under new management. They have their own website at www.princeofwalesbroxted.co.uk where you can look at their menus and find out more about the entertainment on offer.


The Parish Council has now formally taken over the sole trusteeship of the Village Hall charity, and is responsible for its day-to-day management.

At the public meeting held in November 2006 a number of people expressed an interest in being involved in the future of the hall. Another meeting was held in May 2007, to form a new management committee, responsible for the running of the hall, applying for grants and organising maintenance and improvements, and to make a list of ‘carers’ prepared to help with regular cleaning and maintenance.

The hall is a valuable asset of the village and it is hoped that, with the Parish Council now shouldering the financial burden of the hall, it can be given a new lease of life. If you are prepared to help in any way whatsoever, please contact the Clerk to the Council, Phyllis Clark, on 01279 850638.
