NEWS FOR BROXTED & CHICKNEY

from the Five Parishes' Magazine

SEPTEMBER 2005

BROXTED CHURCH

The United Songs of Praise held on the 31st July was very well attended and was a truly joyful occasion! The service was conducted by Michael Goulding and Jane Askew. The hymns had been chosen by members of our Five Parishes, resulting in some hearty singing led by the Five Parishes choir directed by organist Peter Smith.

BROXTED PARISH COUNCIL

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Wednesday 14th September at 8pm in the Village Hall. The Council always welcomes members of the public to its meetings.

TRICIA'S DAY

Janet and Stephen Spivey would like to thank all who contributed to, and joined in, Tricia's Day in August. Special thanks go to the brigade of cooks, stewards, stall-minders and tea-makers, supervised by Holly and orchestrated as usual by John and Joan Taylor with support from Max and Oscar Isham. Proceeds were £803, bringing the total sum donated this year to East Anglia Children's Hospices to over £1,250. Many thanks again to all concerned.

PEOPLE

  • DOUGLAS PATRICK REYNOLDS

The funeral took place on 13th July at St Mary's, Broxted of Douglas Reynolds. Prim and Philip would like to thank the people of Broxted for their kindness and support as they mourn his passing. Doug and Prim lived in Broxted, near the Chapel, for 17 years and are known to many in the area. Doug was a great gardener and also loved renovating old tractors; just last year he took part in the Countess of Warwick's Show. Doug was born in Barnston at ‘Bridleways’ which was where he was living at the time of his death.

  • ALL GOOD WISHES

are sent to Joan and David Helme who, if all goes well, will have moved on the 25th August from Muscombs to Hobbs in Thaxted. We wish them much happiness in their new home.

  • CONGRATULATIONS

to Lucy Cowell on passing your Grade I Violin examination. With lots of love from Mum, Dad and William.

  • BEST WISHES

to Malcolm Richardson following his recent fall.

THE FRIENDS OF THE FIVE PARISHES

Greville Theatre Benefit Performance

Details of the Greville Theatre benefit performance for The Friends on Friday 21st October will not be announced until after this edition is printed. On reading the report of their activities in the Tilty and Duton Hill News, it is obvious how busy, and popular, the Grevillers are! Please put this date in your diary to make sure you do not miss what is bound to be yet another enthralling performance by the Players.

A Night of Magic and Mystery

Tickets are now available for this special Magic Evening on Friday 28th October in Great Easton Village Hall. Space is limited, so don't delay, book today by telephoning Audrey Miller on 01371 870927. Adults £16; children (612 years) £6 each.

Don't forget, this year's Fancy Dress Theme will be "Black and White" with prizes for the best-judged entrants. More Stars from The Magic Circle will be in attendance to perform close-up magic at your tables, culminating in a superb stage show to close the evening. With a seasonal supper and wine available this must be the bargain of the year. Magic's alive in 2005.

Annual Evensong

This ever-popular Friends event takes place this year on Sunday 20th November.

THE FRIENDS OF THE FIVE PARISHES 50% CLUB

To all old friends and new subscribers welcome to the new year. The first draw of the 2005/6 year takes place this month and, at the time of writing, there are a considerable number of people already on the books. It is not too late to take a chance and support the Friends in their fundraising for maintenance of our churches. If you have mislaid the application form, don't worry, just send your name, address and telephone number to Fran Woodrow, at Windy Ridge, Duton Hill, Dunmow, Essex CM6 2DX with a cheque for £12 made payable to The Friends of the Five Parishes 50% Club. The winners of the August draw were Bert and Jean Pickford.

GREAT EASTON CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

In view of the summer holiday in August, there is no contribution from the School for this issue. Hopefully Headteacher Gill Hopkins and her staff and pupils are enjoying their well-earned break and will return for the autumn term well rested and ready to face the new school year. Details will be given in the next issue of the School Harvest Festival service that traditionally takes place in Great Easton church early in October.
