MARCH 2004

Jane would like to thank the church committee and everyone who contributes to the running of the church throughout the year – those who keep the church clean and prepare and decorate it for services and, of course, Dick who looks after the churchyard. All this work is very much appreciated.

The next meeting of the church committee takes place on Monday 15th March at 7.30pm at The Old Vicarage.

If you would like to have a lily put in the church at Easter in memory of a loved one, please contact Michael Goulding on 01279 850251.

The Devotional Hour on Good Friday 9th April takes place once again in Chickney church at 2pm. After the service tea and hot cross buns will be served at Chickney New Hall by kind invitation of Sandra and Terry Reed. Everyone is welcome.

Dick Knowles was presented with an Uttlesford Community Achievement Award at a reception in the Council Offices, Saffron Walden on 12th February. Dick served on Broxted Parish Council for a total of 45 years, 16 of them as Chairman, retiring only in 2003. He has made an outstanding contribution to village life, being involved with every event and activity. For many years Dick has been the Local History Recorder and has helped to maintain the churchyard. The Parish Council congratulates Dick on this most deserved Award.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Wednesday 14th March 2004 at 8pm in the village hall. The Council welcomes members of the public to its meetings, and values their contribution.

It is not too late to get your tickets for the Leap Year Party with AJ's Disco on Saturday 28th February in the village hall from 8pm. Public Meeting

A Public Meeting will be addressed by representatives of the Stop Stansted Expansion campaign in the village hall on Wednesday 7th April at 8pm. This will be your opportunity to hear the very latest details of the campaign and to ask questions of the experts.

Vanishing Villages featuring Broxted Open Gardens

The Parish Council, in conjunction with SSE, will again be helping to organise Broxted Open Gardens as part of the Vanishing Villages Event. This will be on Sunday 27th June. More details will follow, but make a note of the date now, and if you are prepared to open your garden, or can help in any way, please contact the campaign office on 01279 870558.

Phyllis and Roger Clark are organising a Quiz to raise funds for the campaign. The date is Saturday 27th March in Broxted village hall at 7.30 pm for 8pm. Teams are to consist of six people and the cost will be £6 a head. There will be a magnificent buffet, but please bring your own drinks. Roger and Phyllis hope demand will be great but, as space is limited, organise your team now and book it in on 01279 850638.

TV Broadcast

Watch out for Gillian and Roger Coleby of Rough Apple, Pledgdon Green, Henham who will be appearing on "The Real Story" on BBC1 at 7.30 pm on Monday 8th March. They will be recounting their problems in selling Rough Apple as a result of the proposed expansion.

The Annual General Meeting will take place in the hall on Wednesday 17th March at 8pm. Everyone is welcome.

The annual Coffee Morning when the Children's Society boxes are opened will be held at Fistral, Browns End Road on Tuesday 9th March from 10am to 12 noon. If you have a box but are unable to attend, Yvonne will be pleased to collect it. Just ring her on 01279 850355. Everyone is welcome, whether you have a box or not.

Thank you to everyone at Tilty for making the families from school so welcome at the Christingle Service held early in February. The collection for the Children's Society amounted to just under £500 and this will go towards their work in schools to support children who are bullied.

We are very much looking forward to the Confirmation Service involving three of our Year 6 children. We are most grateful to The Rev'd Gillian for deepening our links with the churches and for her weekly assemblies that continue to inspire and teach us.

At our School this month the children's learning will be enriched with a visit to a local farm for Reception and Year 1, a visit to the Museum of Childhood for Year 5 and 6 and a visit from the SNAP Theatre Company for Years 2 to 5 which also involves a performance for parents. The older children will be working with the Road Safety Team and Police on the impact of changing the speed limit on the B184 – you may have noticed the speed camera signs that appeared last month! We still need to do a great deal of work to make drivers understand the dangers of bad parking and speeding.

We currently have a vacancy for a Midday Assistant to cover someone on maternity leave. If you are able to spare one and a quarter hours at lunchtime (12.10 to 1.25 pm) for two or three days a week and like children, please contact the Office on 01371 870219. This is a very important job within the school because ensuring that the children have a happy and safe lunchtime means that they return to classes ready to continue their learning.
