CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT
On 21st December the service of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight was held in a beautifully decorated church filled to capacity. Singing of the carols was led by the Five Parishes Choir with Peter Smith at the organ interspersed with carols played by the Five Parishes Handbell Ringers, conducted by Alison Cohen, which complemented the magical candlelit service. After the service everyone enjoyed a glass of mulled wine and delicious nibbles before leaving for home.

GREAT EASTON CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
As you will be aware from the preview on the front of the January Magazine, there will be a Christingle Service at Tilty on Sunday 1st February to celebrate Candlemas. The school is involved in the preparation for this and hopefully many families will attend the service. Many churches hold a Christingle service as part of their Christmas celebrations but Candlemas is an equally good time for a Christingle service because it allows us to bring some light into the dark months following Christmas. If you do not know what a Christingle service is like, please come along to Tilty to receive one of the Christingles made by the children. It is also a way of supporting the work of the Children's Society: every child at school receives a cardboard candle for collecting coins and this is returned in time for the Christingle service.
You may well have seen in the local press that our school was invaded by Romans at the end of January! This was part of Year 2's programme of work for this term. Increasingly, we are finding that it is more cost effective to have actors and artists into school than spending a lot of time and money on coach trips to meet the experts. This way the children have a full day's contact time with the visitors and this enriches their learning in a memorable way. Having said that, the youngest children recently had a most enjoyable day at Colchester Zoo: we would not expect the zookeepers to bring their exhibits into the school!
An exciting new initiative is planned for the end of February especially for parents. Members of the Essex Behaviour Support Team will be running a course of six two-hour sessions on looking at children's behaviour and how to manage it positively. The sessions will be held at the school on Friday mornings from 9.30 to 11.30 a.m., starting on 27th February. The same team carried out our Playleader training which was of a very high quality, so I do recommend this course to all who can make it.
