More information from SSE:

Terry Waite will launch the event at a special ceremony at Broxted Hill Farm at 12 noon.

Dozens of the beautiful gardens threatened by proposals to expand Stansted Airport will once again be opened to the public to highlight their plight.

Some of the gardens are attached to Grade II listed buildings which would have to be demolished if plans for a second runway at the airport were allowed to go ahead in line with government policy announced in late 2003. Others, while not threatened by the bulldozer, would nevertheless be seriously blighted by the noise and pollution which would accompany an airport one third larger than Heathrow today.

Organised by Stop Stansted Expansion in conjunction with Broxted Parish Council, "Vanishing Villages" will feature gardens of all types, from cottage to formal to theme gardens as well as gardens with play areas for children.  Some will offer refreshments, including cream teas and a BBQ, and many plants will be on sale.  The well-visited and much loved garden at ‘The Old Vicarage’ will also be open for the event with its marvellous plantings, pond, wildflowers and stunning flower beds.

Entry will be by programme (£4 for adults, children free) providing admission to all participating gardens.  Dogs on leads welcome in most gardens.  Parking will be signposted.  Shuttle buses (free for programme holders) will provide transport between parking and gardens.

The organisers have asked for donations as follows:

  • Garden plants of all shapes, sizes and description for sale

  • Homemade cakes, jams, preserves for sale at the fete

  • Homemade scones and/or strawberries for the cream teas

  • Bric-a-brac and books for both the fete and garden stalls

  • Bottles (full please!) for the tombola

  • Raffle prizes (go on, dig out those pristine but unwanted gifts from last Christmas – or perhaps you can offer tickets for an event, a voucher for dinner at a local restaurant, or a chauffeur driven car for a day)

  • Your body! We need extra volunteers to put up signs, marshall in the car park, make candyfloss, serve cream teas – you name it!

If you can help with any of these items, please contact Maggie Sutton on Maggsutton@aol.com or telephone her on 07834 563601.
